US says most BP spill oil is gone or degrading

Please note a few things about this: 1) the headlines originally said “gone” but they now say “gone or degrading.” 2) An estimated 24% (49 million gallons) has been “dispersed” but is not gone and is still toxic to marine wildlife. 3) An estimated 53.5 million gallons remains as “a sheen or tarballs, buried in sediment or washed ashore.”  Any way you slice it, that’s a long way from “gone.”
