THE GULF

Coast Guard should step up security screenings of oil platforms

"Although the Coast Guard aims to inspect oil and gas platforms and other offshore energy facilities once every year, only about a third got the security screenings from 2008 to 2010, according to a government report released this week."

Researchers: BP oil spill may have contributed to Gulf of Mexico dolphin deaths

"Five of the more than 500 dolphins that have washed ashore dead along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas over the past two years died from a bacterial infection called Brucella, federal scientists announced Thursday."

More dolphins found: 3 washed up Friday; 14 total dead in October, which is 'not normal'
"There was a time when one dolphin death was an unusual event. But dolphins dying consistently, month after month, is something that has continued in the northern Gulf since the BP oil spill."
