Oil Drilling News

GULF OIL DISASTER/DEEPWATER DRILLING

Second permit granted for drilling activity banned after oil spill

Organic Aerosol Formation Downwind from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

"A narrow plume of hydrocarbons was observed downwind of DWH that is attributed to the evaporation of fresh oil on the sea surface. A much wider plume with high concentrations of organic aerosol (>25 micrograms per cubic meter) was attributed to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from unmeasured, less volatile hydrocarbons that were emitted from a wider area around DWH. These observations provide direct and compelling evidence for the importance of formation of SOA from less volatile hydrocarbons."

Obama Confronts Oil-Policy Critics

Environmentalists hope to seize the expensive energy moment

"Jesse Prentice-Dunn, transportation policy analyst at the Sierra Club, [said]

"I think hopefully [rising gas prices] will focus our attention on the addiction to foreign oil and allow us to really address the problem," [...]

"I think $5 a gallon gas is the best incentive I know to find a rational energy plan that would create jobs, make us more energy independent and clean up the air," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said."

NORTH CAROLINA

Panel hears mixed opinions on offshore energy

"Retired Marine Lt. Col. Brian Kramer asked that the panel keep the issue of national defense in its discussions as it develops recommendations for the governor.

"Our nation is addicted to oil … and as long as we are, we are going to be bound to a part of the world that doesn't share our values," he said.

Kramer said he is against oil exploration, and finding oil off the coast of North Carolina would not end that tie to the Middle East.

While one person spoke in favor of offshore drilling and the jobs it could produce, the majority of the support was for clean, renewable energy."
